Strumpell sign- An alternative to Babinskis sign

It is an alternative to babinskis sign
The sign is named after Adolph Strümpell
Method  of eliciting Strumpell sign
Forceful pressure is applied over the anterial tibial region.
Response is extension of great toe and fanning out of other toes
Clinical significance
  • It is a sign of pyramidal tract disease
  • These reflexes show a positive Babinski response when the reflexogenic area spreads up in the lower limb.
  • They may be useful in eliciting the Babinski response when the patients are uncooperative or in patients whose soles are extremely sensitive
