Common causes of palpable kidney

Unilateral causes of palpable kidney
  • Dropped kidney (can be pushed to its normal position).
  • Unilateral hydronephrosis or pyonephrosis.
  • Wilms' tumour.
  • Hypernephroma.
  • Large cyst (solitary) in kidney.
  • Compensatory hypertrophy (other kidney damaged).
Causes of bilateral  palpable kidney:
  • Polycystic kidney (irregular surface).
  • Bilateral hydronephrosis.
  • Bilateral dropped kidney.
  • Diabetes mellitus.
  • Amyloidosis.
  • Scleroderma.
  • Acromegaly.
